The Origin of Mother's Day

Mother's Day was initiated by Anna Jarvis (May 1, 1864-November 24, 1948), who was never married and always accompanied her mother. Anna's mother was a very sympathetic and kind-hearted lady, and proposed to set up a day to commemorate the great mothers who silently made sacrifices, but unfortunately she passed away before her wish was fulfilled. Anna started the celebration in 1907 and applied to make Mother's Day a statutory holiday. The festival officially began on May 10, 1908 in West Virginia and Pennsylvania in the United States. In 1913, the U.S. Congress established the second Sunday in May each year as the statutory Mother's Day. Anna's mother's favorite flower was carnation, and carnation became a symbol of Mother's Day.
